Studying tips If you are struggling with how to study or perform better in class, I strongly suggest outlining of texts and writing in the margins of documents. Why outlining? Just reading the chapter once or twice isn’t enough for most students. Outlining not only reinforces the material through writing, which helps stimulate thought processes and critical thinking, but it also gives added structure and organization to the content. It takes a little time and effort, but if you’re reading the chapter anyway, what’s the harm? Basic guidelines For texts - Outline the chapter by sections.
- Indent in the outline to indicate hierarchy/order of events, cause and effect.
- Try to use a few words as possible in your outline. It should be more of a skeleton outline; keywords that will help you remember the rest of the content,
- Turn the topics of each section and its sub-sections into questions, and then try to answer them
For documents - Write notes, summaries in the margins
- After reading the entire article/document and making notes in the margin, write a summary about it. What was the main point of the document and what evidence was given to support it?
